In 13 years of teaching, I have rarely encountered a teacher with the depth of expertise in literacy instruction as Hillary.  She is adept at assessing students' reading abilities (using both formal and informal assessment tools).  In addition, Hillary has an array of lessons, activities and strategies to target the specific needs of her students once they have been identified.  Because she generally works with students who are reluctant or resistant readers, Hillary has designed high-interest, engaging activities.  She is conversant in current research trends in literacy, and she implements these in her practice. ​My son, Jack, had an awful Kindergarten year that left him with little self confidence which lead me to find a tutor. After interviewing several possible candidates locally I met with Hillary and she was astoundingly different. She has compassion, intelligence, experience, and was able to help me as a mom deal with Jack's issues and not just put a bandaid on the problems. Within the first 2 sessions we saw improvement with Jack and he's only gotten stronger as a reader and now has confidence to spare. I, honestly, cannot say enough good things about her. Words can not describe how appreciative I am of Hillary. When my 5th grade daughter first went to Hillary she was two standard deviations behind the mean in math. In less than 6 mos., my daughter's confidence and skills have improve dramatically. At this pace she will reach bench marks by the end of the year.
